Chapter 5

Love and Marriage

Marriage as an arena for conflicts, battles, and violence is a discouraging thought. The popular notion that love and marriage are linked is more comforting. Yet the high divorce rate, increasing domestic violence, and widespread infidelity all raise questions about how durable love is in the marriage relationship. A commentator on the modern scene recently remarked,"A lot of love is wasted before marriage that could be put to good use afterwards." The existence of so much dissension in the closest of human relationships is part of our inherited past and has continued into the present. Leslie's comments are instructive.

Research has not yet provided final answers on the nature of love involvement before marriage. Neither has it indicated how functional or dysfunctional love is for subsequent marriage adjustment.

Folklore has long recognized the contradiction between romantic expectations and the harsh realities of marriage. The following old folk sayings reveal such conflicting views.

Girl, do not exult in thy wedding dress; see
how much trouble lurks behind it.
Husband and wife in perfect accord are like
the music of the harp and lute.
If marriages are made in heaven, you have but
few friends there.
Without a wife, the house is the abode of the
devil. With a wife, the house doth joy [sic].
Marriage is the sunset of love.
